Another Typical Hot Summertime Day: It’s The Midday Nowcast For Central Alabama

| August 28, 2018 @ 12:19 pm

CONDITIONS AT 12:10 PM ACROSS CENTRAL ALABAMA
While most locations are “enjoying” plenty of sunshine on this very hot day across Central Alabama, some are actually lucky enough to be getting a refreshing shower as we have reached the noon hour. Most of the shower activity at this point is located over the east and southeastern parts of the area, but there are a few scattered showers in the southwestern parts as well. All of this activity is not moving much at all, but the good news is that each of these are not lasting all that long at all.

Unfortunately, the heat is not any better up here in St. Louis as we are under an excessive heat warning. Highs are projected to be in the mid-90s with the heat index hitting as high as 105 degrees. You break a sweat just looking outside.

WEATHER FOR THE REST OF YOUR TUESDAY
While much of the northern half of Central Alabama will remain dry throughout the remainder of the daylight hours with only a 20% chance or less, there will be a little higher chance of scattered showers and storms for the southern half, around 30-40%. Afternoon highs will be in the lower to mid-90s underneath mostly sunny skies. There may be one or two isolated showers left over in the southeastern parts of the area after sunset, but all of the area should be dry by the 10:00 PM hour. Lows will be in the lower to mid-70s with mostly clear skies.

MORE UNSETTLED WEATHER FOR YOUR WEDNESDAY
Shower and thunderstorm chances will begin to rise as the ridging that has been in control of our weather pattern begins to weaken. Tomorrow will be partly cloudy with a chance of scattered to numerous showers and storms, ranging from 30% to 50% from west to east. Afternoon highs will be in the upper 80s to the lower 90s. Those shower/storm chances reduce to 20-30% for the evening and into the overnight hours, with lows bottoming out in the lower to mid-70s.

TROPICAL OUTLOOK FOR THE ATLANTIC BASIN
Nothing is expected to develop in the next couple of days across the Atlantic Basin, but we do note that the National Hurricane Center will be keeping an eye out the eastern Atlantic for a tropical wave that is expected to move off of the African coast. At this point, some organization is expected but is only given a 20% chance of developing into a tropical depression/storm within the next 120 hours. We’ll need to keep our eyes open as we are now reaching the peak time of the hurricane season.

ON THIS DAY IN WEATHER HISTORY
1988 – Tropical Storm Chris spawned a tornado near Manning, SC, which killed one person, and spawned three tornadoes in North Carolina. Chris produced one to two-foot tides, and three to six-inch rains, over coastal South Carolina. Severe thunderstorms in New York State and Vermont, developing ahead of a cold front, spawned a tornado which killed one person at Hector NY, produced tennis ball size hail at Brandon VT, and produced wind gusts to 80 mph at Lyndonville VT.

We had plenty of meteorological all-stars roll through the interview chair, plus they even found time to throw me in the mix.WeatherBrains is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including the meteorologists at ABC 33/40.
