Alabama Update at 12:30 p.m.: More Scattered Showers and Storms Expected Across Central Sections This Afternoon
Showers and a couple of isolated storms that were prominent early this morning across Central Alabama have devolved into an area of showers across Chilton and Autauga Counties up into Coosa, Clay and Tallapoosa Counties just after noon.
Upstream to our west, an area of storms was over the Delta area of western Mississippi. This activity appears to be weakening rapidly and turning to the north.
Some showers were forming over Northwest Alabama and Northeast Mississipi along outflow from earlier storms over western Mississippi.
Visible satellite imagery indicates a few breaks in the clouds across Central Alabama, but many areas remain mostly cloudy.
Watch for waves emanating from the earlier activity over Mississipi to help enhance storm development across Central Alabama this afternoon in areas mainly south of I-20. Some storms will produce heavy rain, gusty winds, and dangerous lightning. We don’t really expect any severe weather.
The activity will die down between 8 and 9 p.m. tonight, leaving generally calm conditions overnight, with lows in the lower 70s.
Monday will feature another round of showers and storms mainly during the afternoon hours. We will be monitoring a strong line of storms to our northwest that could get into Alabama late tomorrow night. Northwestern sections of the state could see some damaging winds and perhaps even an isolated tornado late tomorrow night, but the threat is small as the system will be weakening. But it does bear watching.
Tuesday will feature a cold front pushing through the state with development coming by mid-afternoon ahead of it mainly over eastern Alabama. Some of those storms could be on the strong side.
The front will usher in slightly cooler than normal and less humid than normal air for Wednesday and Thursday across Central and North Alabama. Expect lower to middle 60s for morning lows Thursday, with a few 50s in the normally cooler locations.
Typical conditions for late August will return by the weekend. Expect highs trending back to near 90F with lows and dewpoints near 70F.
No hurricanes on the horizon in the Atlantic, but watch out around Labor Day as increasingly strong easterly waves from Africa get close in to the United States coastline.
