A Quick Update On Our Weather Situation At 1:45 PM

| August 1, 2018 @ 1:49 pm

If there is any good news for the rain-soaked locations in the eastern half of Central Alabama, the Storm Prediction Center has removed the Marginal Risk for severe storms that was defined earlier this morning. The bad news is that the flooding risk continues for the Flash Flood Watch area as moderate to heavy rainfall continues to train over the same areas that have already received a ton of rain within the last 24 hours.

Radar estimates since roughly 9:00 AM on Tuesday shows rainfall amounts at or just over 8.00 inches in the northeastern parts of the area, especially around Centre and Rainbow City, with 2.00-6.00 inch totals closeby.

With plenty of rainfall to come over at least the next 24-hours, NWS Birmingham continues a Flash Flood Watch until 7:00 PM Thursday. The watch includes Autauga, Barbour, Bibb, Blount, Bullock, Calhoun, Chambers, Cherokee, Chilton, Clay, Cleburne, Coosa, Dallas, Elmore, Etowah, Jefferson, Lee, Lowndes, Macon, Montgomery, Perry, Pike, Randolph, Russell, Shelby, St. Clair, Talladega, and Tallapoosa counties.

The above animation is the latest run of the HRRR Simulated Radar valid from 2:00 PM this afternoon through 6:00 AM Thursday. Plenty of rainfall will continue to occur over those locations in the watch, while a few scattered showers and storms will be possible to the west of the watch area. Much of the activity will die down during the late night and through much of the overnight, but activity looks to start to pick back up by daybreak.

I’ll have updates throughout the day. If any warnings or advisories are issued for any part of North and Central Alabama, those will be posted immediately after they are issued by the National Weather Service. Keep checking back often.
