A Quick Check On Central Alabama’s Weather At Midday
RADAR CHECK AT 12:40 PM: The extreme southern locations in Central Alabama are seeing some big thunderstorms at the moment, especially south of a line from Linden to Montgomery to Phenix City. Very heavy rainfall, along with dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning and gusty winds, is occurring with these storms. For the rest of Central Alabama, we have a few scattered showers and storms mainly over the eastern half of the area, with the strongest occurring around the Vincent and Harpersville areas.
MARGINAL RISK FOR SEVERE STORMS: Much of the state, with the exception of the northwest corner and the extreme southwestern corner, has been defined in a Marginal Risk for severe storms today through 7:00 AM Wednesday morning. Scattered thunderstorm development will become widespread in coverage today. An adequate amount of deep layer shear combined with sufficient instability will allow for a few storms to become strong to marginally severe with locally damaging winds being the main threat. Due to the disorganized nature of the convection at this point, SPC does not believe that a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is needed.
WHAT TO EXPECT FOR THE REST OF THE AFTERNOON AND EARLY EVENING: We’ll continue to have showers and thunderstorms form throughout the rest of the daylight hours and move off to the northeast, while plenty of moisture continues to flow in from the southwest. It looks like the southern half of the area could see some very heavy rainfall at times today that could lead to some localized flash flooding issues. All of Central Alabama will have a great shot at seeing shower and thunderstorm activity, with rain chances ranging from 60% in the northwest to 100% in the southeast. A few storms could be strong to marginally severe with isolated damaging wind gusts as the main threat. Highs will top out in the 80s.
FOR TONIGHT THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT HOURS: Rainfall will begin to diminish in coverage a little later tonight, but we should continue to see scattered showers and storms continue on through the overnight hours. Most of the activity should be over the southern half of the area, but a few showers and storms could linger in the northwestern parts of Central Alabama. Overnight lows will be in the upper 60s to the lower 70s.
