Hot As A Firecracker At Midday On The 4th
CONDITIONS ACROSS THE AREA AT 12:45 PM
Happy Independence Day!!! It is a hot one for sure out there across North and Central Alabama as we are about to leave the midday hour. A few showers and storms have popped up over the eastern parts of the area, while the remainder of the area is hot and dry with a good bit of sunshine. Temperatures are already up in the upper 80s to the lower 90s. Birmingham was at 90ºF.
WEATHER FOR THE REST OF YOUR INDEPENDENCE DAY
The Storm Prediction Center has just released an update to the Day 1 Outlook for Severe Storms and they have defined a good portion of the northern half of Alabama in a Marginal Risk for severe storms through the rest of the day. The risk area includes locations north of a line from Millport to Forestdale to Fort Payne.
We’ll continue to have a chance of scattered afternoon and early evening showers and thunderstorms, but if it’s not raining outside, it will be hot and humid with mostly clear to partly cloudy skies. Afternoon highs will be up in the lower to mid-90s across the area. For tonight, most of the shower and storm activity will have diminished, but a few scattered storms are possible throughout the night and into the overnight hours. Lows will be down in the lower to mid-70s.
THE TROPICS ARE GETTING ACTIVE
We may have a tropical depression by the end of the week off of the east coast of the US, but at this point the system is just disorganized showers and thunderstorms. This should be no treat to the US Mainland or to Bermuda as it is forecast to move in between the two to the north before a front catches it by Sunday and stunts any further development.
A tropical wave has formed several hundred miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands and some further development is possible over the next few days. Upper-level winds this weekend will make development less possible as the wave approaches the Lesser Antilles. Neither one of the long-range forecast models are picking up on this system, but we’ll keep an eye on it through the next few days.

1776 – Thomas Jefferson paid for his first thermometer, and signed the Declaration of Independence. According to his weather memorandum book, at 2 PM it was cloudy and 76 degrees.
