Heavy Rain Moving Northward Through South Alabama; Feeder Bands Ahead of It; Tornado Threat Basically Gone Though

| May 28, 2018 @ 8:27 pm

We are tracking Subtropical Storm Alberto tonight as it moves northward into South Alabama. The center is just past Foorala in Covington County, Alabama.

A flash flood warning is in effect for the southern half of Covington County as well as Okaloosa County in Florida.

The huge heavy rain shield associated with Alberto now extends as far north as Butler and Crenshaw counties, with heavy rain falling over all of Covington County as well. Moderate to heavy rain extends into parts of Conecuh, Escambia, Coffee, and Geneva Counties.

Rainfall amounts exceeding one inch per hour may be occurring in the heavier convective cells.

Flooding is likely all along the path of this heavy rain, all the way to Selma and Montgomery. The City of Montgomery’s flood-prone areas should go ahead and prepare now. Places like Greenville, Luverne, Brantley, Fort Deposit, and Haynesville should also be ready for flooding.

Convective bands are spiraling out of the center of the storm, covering much of Central and South Alabama at this hour.

Bands of rain are already causing occasional heavy rain in the Montgomery area. One band just moved through the Birmingham area, but it has been weakening.

To the north, storms over Northeast Alabama along this same band are strong but not severe. Strong storms are crossing I-59 near Collinsville in DeKalb County now extending back to Centre and Cedar Bluff in Cherokee County. Lots of lightning and gusty winds along with heavy rain, but no chance of any tornadoes here.

In fact, it appears now that the tornado threat is gone for East Alabama overnight. With the loss of the heating of the day, the threat appears non-existant.

The main rain shield will reach the Birmingham Metro area including Shelby County by 1 a.m. It now appears that the heaviest rain may rotate into West Alabama in the predawn hours.

We will be monitoring everything through the night.
