Plenty Of Showers & Storms Causing Some Flooding Concerns At Midday

| May 23, 2018 @ 11:38 am

Radar Check At 11:25 AM

There are plenty of showers and thunderstorms out there across Central Alabama as we make the run up to the midday hour, some of which have been causing some flooding issues. An Areal Flood Warning is in effect for parts of Lee County until 12:00 PM, and an Areal Flood Advisory is in effect for parts of Autauga, Chilton, and Elmore counties until 12:45 PM today.

Much of the activity at this point is located over the western half of the area, with scattered showers and storms stretching from Marion and Winston counties down to Sumter, Greene, and Hale counties, and eastward to Lowndes and Montgomery counties. These are moving southeastward very slowly. More showers and storms are located over the southeastern parts of the area over Pike and Barbour counties, and are starting to diminish somewhat as they move to the southeast.

Temperatures at this point are ranging from the lower 70s where there is rain-cooled air, to the upper 80s where there is plenty of sunshine. Birmingham was at 82 degrees, while the warm spot is Tuscaloosa at 88 degrees. The cool spot is Bessemer at 73 degrees.

Weather For The Rest Of Your Wednesday

As you can see by the animation above, we’ll continue to have scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms throughout the remainder of the afternoon and well into the evening hours. Most of these will be slow movers and we may have a few localized flash flooding issues as all of the area has precipitable water values of 1.80″ and above. While most of the activity will begin to diminish after sunset, a few showers and storms could persist well after midnight. Afternoon highs will be in the 80s with lows in the mid-60s to the lower 70s.

Update On The Tropics

A broad surface low that is located near the northeastern coast of Belize is expected to move northward towards the Gulf Coast, and as it does, conditions will become more favorable for development. The National Hurricane Center has a 60% chance of tropical cyclone development within the next 5 days. Heavy rains can be expected from Florida and the northern Gulf Coast during the weekend, even if this low does not develop into a tropical depression.
