Almost Feeling Like Summertime At Midday, Definitely Will Tomorrow

| May 8, 2018 @ 12:01 pm

As we make the run up to the noon hour, skies are nearly clear out there across Central Alabama with only a few fair-weather cumulus clouds starting to form. Temperatures are quite nice out there as well, running in the mid-70s in the northeastern parts of Central Alabama to the mid-80s in the southern parts. At 11:40 AM, Birmingham was sitting at 81 degrees, while Troy and Eufaula were tied with Tuscaloosa at 84 degrees, the warmest spots in the area. Gadsden was the cool spot at 75 degrees. The good news is that dewpoints are only in the 50s throughout the area, making it comfortable outside at this time.

For the rest of today, we will continue to have mostly sunny skies throughout the remainder of the daylight hours with afternoon highs reaching the mid to upper 80s… some spots in the extreme southeastern parts of the area could reach 90 degrees or a tad higher. That, in my book, officially registers in the “hot category.” Skies will continue to be mainly clear during the late night and through the overnight hours Lows will dip down into the mid-50s to the lower 60s.

Wednesday’s weather looks to be even warmer still. We’ll have a mix of sun and clouds and afternoon highs will reach the upper 80s to the lower 90s from north to south throughout Central Alabama. Skies will clear out a little, but we’ll continue to have partly cloudy to mostly clear skies throughout the area during the late night and overnight hours. Lows will be in the upper 50s to the mid-60s.

On This Day In Weather History
1988 – Thunderstorms in the Mississippi Valley spawned a total of 57 tornadoes, including 24 in Wisconsin, and a record 22 tornadoes in one day in Iowa. There were also more than 200 reports of large hail and damaging winds. Baseball size hail was reported at Terre Bonne Mo. At Rockford IL one person was temporarily trapped inside a portable toilet toppled by thunderstorm winds gusting to 80 mph. Fortunately, not a single person was killed in the “Mother’s Day” tornado outbreak.
