Warm, Mostly Dry Pattern Continues

BENIGN WEATHER PATTERN: We are forecasting a warm, dry day fo Alabama today with ample sunshine along with a high in the mid 80s. The average high for May 8 (for Birmingham) is 80. Pretty much the same situation tomorrow; warm and dry with most spots seeing a high in the mid 80s.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: We will being in a chance of isolated showers or storms for the northern third of the state with a weak surface boundary approaching, but there is little upper support, and moisture will be limited. Most of the state will stay dry with a high in the mid to upper 80s.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: It should be the warmest weekend so far this year; we project a high between 87 and 90 degrees Saturday and Sunday with lots of sunshine both days.

NEXT WEEK: Not much change. The pattern looks very warm and mostly dry; we might have a day or two with some risk of isolated showers, but nothing widespread. No risk of severe storms for Alabama over the next seven to ten days, even through we are still in the spring tornado season (it runs through the end of May). GETTING DRY: Today will be the 12th consecutive day with no measurable rain for Birmingham; last time we had enough rain to measure (based on data at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth Airport) was April 26 when 1.26″ was measured. We could use a few more good, soaking rains before June arrives, but no sign of that for now.

ON THIS DATE TEN YEARS AGO: A series of tornadoes touched down across North Alabama, including three in Cullman County. One of the tornadoes moved across Smith Lake; that tornado blew down or snapped off hundreds of trees, damaged or destroyed at least 5 chicken houses, and destroyed at least 5 boat houses at the Euskin Point Marina.
