Storms Strengthening Over West Alabama

| April 22, 2018 @ 4:45 pm

Storms are developing over West Alabama ahead of the surface low, as we expected.

They cover parts of Lamar, Pickens, northwestern Tuscaloosa and northern Sumter Counties. They will move into north Greene County as well shortly.

There has been some lightning, but these are mostly low topped storms with tops barely above 30,000 feet.

There is a bowing segment moving across northern Sumter County. Winds are 65 mph just 5,000 feet off the ground. This storm will produce strong wind gusts and it could become severe.

This activity could intensify and could produce a brief tornado threat.

Heavy rain will occur as well, with rainfall rates around one inch per hour.

Be in a substantial structure as these storms approach.
