A Little Breezy But Very Nice At Midday… A Few Showers Are Out There
Conditions Across Central Alabama at 11:45 AM
We have more clouds out there today than we do sunshine at midday across Central Alabama, but a nice breeze with these unseasonably warm temperatures are making this late February day really enjoyable. Temperatures throughout the area are ranging from the lower 70s to right at 80s degrees, with winds out of the south at 5-10 MPH and gusting as high as 20 MPH at times. Birmingham was at 79 degrees, while the warm spot was Montgomery at 80 degrees, and Alexander City and Auburn were tied at 72 degrees as the cool spots.
Latest radar image from NWS Birmingham is showing some widely scattered showers over portions of the southwestern parts of Central Alabama, while most of the activity is located over the northwestern parts of the state. Some of these showers are affecting the northwestern corner of Central Alabama, especially over Lamar and Marion counties. These are moving off to the north-northwest, but a few more are likely in this area before the afternoon is over.
For The Remainder Of Your Wednesday
The latest run of the HRRR Simulated Radar model shows the possibility of a few scattered showers through the remainder of the afternoon and into the evening hours, but drying out for the remainder of the night and into the pre-dawn hours on Thursday until the frontal boundary finally starts to move closer to the area. The best chances for rain throughout the entire state will be in the northwestern corner, mainly north of US-278 and west of I-65. Today’s highs are expected to around and over record highs for the date, with the upper 70s to the mid-80s expected throughout the area. Birmingham’s record high of 78 degrees set back in 1922 may have already been broken, as the latest reading at 11:35 AM was already at 79 degrees. We’ll have to wait and see what the official high tops out at when it is released from NWS Birmingham later today. Tonight’s lows will be in the lower to mid-60s.
Thursday’s Weather
Moisture starts to back away from Central Alabama on Thursday as the ridge over the southeast starts to strengthen, pushing most of the shower activity well north and west of the area. Skies will be partly to mostly cloudy and we can’t rule out a few stray showers throughout the day, especially west of I-59 and I-20/59. Afternoon highs will once again be unseasonably warm, making it into the upper 70s to the mid-80s. Thursday evening and throughout the overnight hours will be dry and temperatures will continue to be mild, only dropping into the upper 50s to the lower 60s.
