A Quick Check Of Our Weather Situation Just Before 6:00 PM
Radar check at 5:47 PM continues to show light to moderate rainfall falling over much of the area at this point, with pockets of heavier rain and some embedded lightning. The only lightning showing up in the area is located near Union Springs in Bullock County. The more active weather has been contained to the southwestern parts of Alabama and the southeastern parts of Mississippi.
We’ll continue to have showers and a few embedded thunderstorms throughout the rest of the evening and the overnight hours tonight, with some of the rain being being heavy at times.
SPC continues a Marginal Risk for severe storms through the late night and overnight hours mainly for locations along and south of I-20. The main threat will be from damaging straight-line thunderstorm wind gusts, but a brief isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. The larger threat for tonight will be from the possibility of flooding due to heavier storms dumping 1-2 inches of rainfall in a very short amount of time.
Several flood warnings are in effect for parts of the Black Warrior and the Tombigbee rivers, as those river stages will reach the minor flood stage within the next several hours.
A Flood Watch continues in effect for all of Central Alabama until 6:00 PM Sunday. Rainfall totals of one and a half to two and a half inches with locally higher totals are possible through Sunday afternoon. A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on current forecasts.
