A Check On Our Weather Situation At 4:00 AM

| December 27, 2017 @ 4:00 am

As we are approaching the 4 o’clock hour on Wednesday morning, we are still not hearing of any travel issues in the northern parts of Central Alabama, and it looks like the precipitation for the area is starting to dissipate some. The heavier showers are now located in the eastern half of the state where temperatures are above freezing. As far as any wintry precipitation, a few light showers with a possible mix of sleet and snowflakes are falling in the extreme north and northwestern parts of Central Alabama, mainly north of a line from Winfield to Jasper to Oneonta. Haleyville (30º) and Cullman (31º) are the only reporting stations below freezing at this point.

The overall situation may begin improving soon as radar trends to the west in northern Mississippi is really beginning to dry out and the sleet threat will really lower within the next couple of hours. The main bulk of the precipitation yet to make it into Alabama is located over southern Mississippi and into Louisiana, and temperatures for South Alabama will be well above freezing and no threat of icing at all for that part of the state.

If the current trends continue from what is showing on the radar at this point, most of the precipitation will be out of the state within the next 2-3 hours (6 AM-7 AM), and the threat of any wintry precipitation will come to an end. Still think that there may be a few slick spots out there mainly in the northwestern parts of the area, mainly in Marion and Winston counties, but precipitation is very light and major problems are not expected.
