Fall Arrives; Still Feels Like Summer

HELLO FALL: The equinox was at 3:02p CT… today is the day we have approximately 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness. Of course, this is Alabama, and often we don’t really enjoy the first good front of fall until October, and we will stay warm for the next 5 to 7 days.

We have isolated showers and storms on radar across Central Alabama this afternoon, otherwise the sky is partly sunny with temperatures mostly in the upper 80s. The showers fade away once the sun goes down.

The weather won’t change much over the weekend…. warm, humid conditions tomorrow and Sunday with partly sunny days and fair nights. Afternoon showers and storms will remain few and far between, and highs will be in the mid to upper 80s. Chance of any one spot getting is about one in five.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For tonight’s high school games, it will be warm and humid with temperatures falling from the low 80s at kickoff, into the upper 70s by the final whistle. Just a slight risk of a shower during the first quarter.

Alabama will be in Nashville tomorrow to take on the Vanderbilt Commodores (2:30p CT kickoff)… the sky will be mostly sunny with a kickoff temperature near 88 degrees… falling into the mid 80s by the fourth quarter. Just an outside risk of a brief shower or storm.

Auburn is also on the road; they play Missouri in Columbia tomorrow evening (6:30p CT kickoff)… we expect a clear sky with temperatures falling from 85 degrees at kickoff into the upper 70s by the final whistle.

And, UAB is also traveling this weekend; they play North Texas tomorrow evening (5:30p CT kickoff) in Denton. The weather will be dry with a fair sky; about 90 degrees at kickoff, falling through the 80s during the game.

NEXT WEEK: No real chance for the first half of the week as the upper ridge holds, but a pattern change begins later in the week as an upper trough develops over the eastern half of the nation. This should open the door for much cooler air in here as October begins.

MARIA: Hurricane Maria remains a category three hurricane with sustained winds of 125 mph; a gradual weakening trend is expected over the next few days. A turn toward the north is expected late tomorrow. On the forecast track, Maria’s core will move away from the Turks and Caicos Islands tonight, and pass northeast and east of the Bahamas through Sunday.

The hurricane could get close enough to the North Carolina Outer Banks for some wind and rain by the middle of next week, but the center should remain offshore, and it will move out to sea in 5-7 days.
