DroughtWatch: 365 Day Deficit at BHM Wiped Out, But Varying Short Term Moisture Needs
Alabama is 100% drought free at the moment with only a tiny sliver of western Colbert County even experiencing dry conditions.
Now that doesn’t mean that your lawn or garden doesn’t need water. With fickle summertime rainfall patterns, lawns in Vestavia are pretty happy, while lawns in Corner in northwestern Jefferson County need sprinkling.
RAINFALL UPDATE: For the last thirty days, anything within about fifty miles of I-59 has enjoyed plentiful rain.
The Birmingham Airport has posted a 5.6-inch surplus over the past 30 days.
The ninety-day surplus is an amazing 11 inches.
We have even been able to wipe out the huge deficit suffered last fall and now have a meager 0.3 inch surplus over the last 365 days.
But don’t count your chickens in the drought department. It’s still summer and those rainfall patterns can be fickle.
HOW FICKLE? We need a little more than one inch of rain to stay above normal in the rainfall department across Central Alabama. The crystal ball says that much of North and Central Alabama should see between 1.25 and 2 inches of rain in the next seven days. Fourteen-day totals should be between 2-4 inches. This will be courtesy of additional troughiness.
