A Quick Central Alabama Weather Update At 5:30PM
RADAR CHECK AT 5:30PM
We have active showers and thunderstorms at this time, mainly in two batches… the first being up in the northeastern part of Central Alabama, and the second affecting the western counties in the area. There are currently no warnings in effect for anyone in the area, and the Storm Prediction Center held off in issuing a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for the area.
As the sun is starting to go down, the atmospheric heating will start to reverse now, and instability values should begin to drop off and continue as the evening progresses.
Surface CAPE values are still in the 2500-3000 J/kg range with a few pockets that are at or above 3500 J/kg, meaning that strong storms are still possible.
Downdraft CAPE values are still running at or just over 1000 J/kg, but will be quickly dropping after the 7PM hour. The potential for strong to marginally severe wind gusts from thunderstorm downdrafts will be possible for at least the next 2-3 hours.
Once the sun gets below the horizon, shower and storm activity will really start to diminish, and will mostly be over with sometime before midnight.
A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect for parts of Central Alabama until 7PM tonight.
We will continue to have frequent updates and immediate alerts for warnings here on the AlabamaWX blog.
