More Showers & A Few Storms Tonight Through Tomorrow

| May 29, 2017 @ 5:14 pm

By Bill Murray & Scott Martin.

Sorry for the late delivery of your afternoon edition. It’s what happens when you block the bosses access to the blog. You have to write the package! So Scott Martin jumped in to help so we could get it to you quicker! No video today with the holiday schedule.

FOR THE REMAINDER OF YOUR MEMORIAL DAY
We currently have a few showers and thunderstorms moving across the northern parts of the state, affecting the western parts of Limestone and down into northern Lawrence County, along with showers dotting across portions of Cullman, Marshall, Morgan, Madison, and Dekalb Counties. Another shower has formed in Walker County near Dora and West Jefferson. These showers formed along the stalled frontal boundary in northern Mississippi and have pushed across the state throughout the afternoon hours today. There are a few more small showers across the northeastern corner of Mississippi, but these are very small.

To the south of that, we have some showers in the southeastern parts of Mississippi and into the southwestern portions of Central Alabama. These will continue to push to the east-northeast throughout the rest of the evening hours tonight, but should mainly diminish after 10PM. Overnight lows will be in the mid 60s to near 70 degrees.

TUESDAY
We’ll have more showers form and push across the southern half of the state during the pre-dawn through the late morning hours before diminishing. We’ll have scattered showers and storms develop with the heating of the day throughout Central Alabama from the late morning into the early evening hours. These storms should diminish after sunset and be completely gone by 9-10PM. Above is the latest NAM-3k simulated radar animation from 1AM Tuesday to 1AM Wednesday. Highs will top out in the upper 70s to the mid 80s across Central Alabama, with lows tomorrow night in the lower to mid 60s. No severe weather is expected with the storms that do develop, and the SPC only had the state outlined in the general thunderstorms definition.

MIDWEEK AND BEYOND
The cold front that is stalled to our northwest will get a push to the southeast tomorrow and it should be near the Gulf Coast by Wednesday morning. But we remain in a southwesterly flow aloft, which will be littered with disturbances, keeping rain chances a little elevated on Wednesday. The trough powering the front will begin to lift out to the northeast on Thursday, and we will return to a more summerlike pattern as a ridge begins to build into the Southeast from the southwest. Highs will be near seasonal norms with afternoon readings in the middle 80s and lows in the lower and middle 60s.

FOR THE WEEKEND
Another front will be approaching the area by the weekend, increasing our rain chances again. Looks like Sunday will have the highest probabilities, with the front sliding through on Sunday night.

RAIN AMOUNTS
Projected rainfall amounts from the GFS over the next two weeks range between 1.75-3 inches. That will keep us just ahead of the Drought Devil.

VOODOO COUNTRY
A backdoor cold front will try to slide into Alabama from the northeast around the middle of the following week, so look for good rain chances around the 13th-14th.
