Birmingham and Maxwell Radars Down, Some Flooding Across the Area
I would give you a radar update, but I can’t. The National Weather Service in Birmingham has lost internet due to a large Verizon outage. This means that radar data from the BMX an Maxwell Doppler radars is unable to get out to the world, but the forecasters can view the data just fine.
Their workstations are affected by the outage, but this will not affect their ability to issue products as they are backed up by Peachtree City (Atlanta).
There are several reports of flooding across Metro Birmingham:
…Tarrant Elementary School is closed due to flooding inside the building.
…Flooding on the UAB campus on 6th Avenue South and also near 13th Street South.
…Green Springs exit off I-65 is flooded with a stranded vehicle. The exit has been closed by police.
2.53 inches of rain so far at the Birmingham Airport. That won’t erase that 12 month deficit of over 14 inches, but it will help.
Trees were reported down in some spots around Tuscaloosa, making for some travel issues there.
Numerous trees were reported down in Sumter County early this morning when severe storms moved through that area.
BIG RAINS TO THE WEST YESTERDAY
…Jackson MS picked up 5.38 inches of rain, a new record for the date.
…Vicksburg MS picked up 7.01 inches of rain, a new record for the date.
…Alexandria LA picked up 9.01 inches of rain, a new record for the date.
NEW TORNADO WATCH TO THE SOUTH
A new tornado watch was just issued for South Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. It will go until 1 p.m.
