A Quick Update To Our Weather Situation at 1PM
The main squall line associated with the cold front has now entered the western parts of Central Alabama, and is stretching from Huntsville to the southwest through Winfield and Vernon, and back into the central parts of Mississippi and into north and central parts of Louisiana. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was in effect for parts of Lowndes County in eastern Mississippi for wind gusts up to 60 MPH. This storm is moving to the east at 45 and will move into Lamar and Pickens counties shortly.
The severe weather threat for this afternoon and evening still appears to be low due to the limited amounts of instability and the mid-level flow being nearly parallel to the line of storms. A few storms could become strong to severe across Central Alabama, especially over the western half of the area, with the main risk being from straight-line winds. I believe that the very small risk of a tornado can be taken out of the threat risk as of now.
The SPC continues to have the western half of Central Alabama in the “Marginal Risk” for severe storms through the remainder of the afternoon and evening, and has removed the “Slight Risk” completely from the state.
Timing for the storms to arrive in the Birmingham and Tuscaloosa areas still appears to be in the 3-4PM time range, with it arriving in the Gadsden and Anniston areas approximately 60 minutes later. Rain should be out of the Birmingham area by 8PM.
