A Quick Update On Our Weather Situation At 11AM

| March 7, 2017 @ 11:00 am

The batch of showers that brought some rainfall to the Birmingham metropolitan area earlier this morning has now moved over into the eastern parts of the state. No severe weather, and not even any lightning happening in the Central Alabama area at this time.

The good news is that the threat for any severe weather for the area has reduced since our last update. The SPC has removed the “Slight Risk” from the entire state for the remainder of today’s event, and only the “Marginal Risk” remains for roughly the western half of Central Alabama and down into the southwestern part of the state.

Currently, the squall line that will be affecting us later this afternoon, is moving through the northwestern half of Mississippi. Right now, the line is just general thundershowers with a few heavier storms on the southern end of the line near Yazoo City and Tallulah. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch continues in effect for much of the northern half of Mississippi and back into northeastern Louisiana, but the good news is that there are no current warnings in effect for this system.

As the line enters Central Alabama, CAPE values will be highest (mainly less than 500 J/kg) just ahead of the line, but values are continuing to show a decline as the model advances in time.

So it looks that this line will mainly be just general thunderstorms for much of the area, with a few strong storms possible. We can’t rule out a storm or two possibly reaching severe strength, with straight-line winds being the main threat, mainly for the western half of Central Alabama. The risk for a tornado is not zero, but the likelihood of one forming will be very, very low.

HRRR Simulated Radar at 4PM.

Latest HRRR has the line reaching the Birmingham and Tuscaloosa areas between 3-4PM, and reaching the Gadsden and Anniston areas between 4-5 PM. All rain should be out of the state by just after midnight, but out of the Birmingham area by 8PM.

We’ll keep you posted throughout the day on the blog.
