New Tornado Watch Forthcoming for Louisiana, Mississippi and West Alabama

The SPC is very concerned about the continued threat of tornadoes overnight from Louisiana to western Alabama.

Our big upper level trough is digging into New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle tonight. A very strong jet stream extends northeastward across Oklahoma, Missouri and into the Chicago area. The low level jet (at about 5,000 feet) is strengthening tonight from Louisiana across Mississippi and into Alabama. This is pumping lots of warm, moist air northward out of the Gulf of Mexico and providing low level wind shear.

This advection of warm, moist air will maintain decent instability overnight. This means we will see an increase in the coverage and intensity of thunderstorms later this evening over Louisiana and Mississippi. This activity will spread into northwestern Alabama later as well.

The storms should congeal into a large squall line over night. It will push across West Central and Northwest Alabama after 1 a.m. It should reach the I-59 corridor between 4-5 a.m. and weaken a bit after 6 a.m. Additional rain and storms will continue though through the morning hours.

It’s going to be a very long night. Please have a way to receive warnings through the night.
