Coldest morning so far this season for a number of communities.

It will be another beautiful fall day, with ample sunshine and a high around 70 degrees this afternoon.

RECORD DRY SPELL: This is now the longest period of no measurable rain on record for Birmingham. Today is the 53rd consecutive day with no measurable rain at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth Airport (where the records are kept)… beating the old record of 52 dry days set in 1924.

A drought emergency remains in effect for all 67 Alabama counties. Remember… NO outdoor burning… it is illegal for any person to set fire to any forest, grass, woods, wildlands or marshes; to build a campfire or bonfire; or to burn trash or other material that may cause a forest, grass or woods fire. Specifically, the regulation prohibits any prescribed burns, any campfire or bonfire, any trash or debris fires, or any other open burning.

And, conserve water. Birmingham Water Works remains in a “stage four extreme drought emergency”.

TOMORROW THROUGH THE WEEKEND: Sunny days, clear nights. The high tomorrow will be in the low 70s, followed by mid to upper 60s Saturday and Sunday. Lows will be in the 30s and 40s. With frost for the colder spots, much like this morning.

NEXT WEEK: Still no rain through Thursday as dry air stays in place. By next Thursday, November 17, we will have gone 60 consecutive days with no measurable rain. But, with an pattern flip hope for rain is high at the end of the week; both global models show a cold front with a band of showers and storms late Friday or Saturday (November 18-19)…

And, European ensemble output still shows over 6 inches of rain from November 15-December 25… let’s hope that verifies. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

AT THE BEACH: Mostly sunny days, clear nights on the coast from Gulf Shores to Panama City Beach through early next week with highs in the 70s. See a very detailed Gulf Coast forecast here.

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin remains quiet, and tropical storm formation is not expected through the weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 1975: The SS Edmund Fitzgerald sank during a ferocious storm on Lake Superior. All 29 crew members died. The shipwreck was soon to be made famous in the haunting song by Gordon Lightfoot, The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, which was released in 1976….

“The wind in the wires made a tattle-tale sound
When the wave broke over the railing
And every man knew, as the captain did too
‘Twas the witch of November come stealin.’”

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: Eleven tornadoes touched down across North/Central Alabama as part of the “Veterans Day Tornado Outbreak” across the eastern U.S. In our state, 12 were killed; 8 of those fatalities came from a long track tornado moved through parts of Fayette, Walker, Winston, and Cullman Counties. Another tornado produced extensive damage at Carbon Hill in Walker County.
