Cold Front Arrives Tonight

| November 3, 2016 @ 6:20 am

EXCEPTIONAL DROUGHT CONDITIONS CONTINUE: Today most likely will be the 46th consecutive day without measurable rain for Birmingham, and with no really significant chance showing up through the end of next week, it looks like we have a good chance of breaking the record dry spell; 52 consecutive days set in 1924.

The new Drought Monitor will be released in a few hours, and no doubt it will show expanding exceptional drought conditions over Alabama. A “drought emergency” is in effect for most of the state, and a no burn order remains in effect. And, water conservation is urged.

FRONT ARRIVES TONIGHT: Often with cold fronts in November, we wind up with a good rain/storm event, but not this time. No soil moisture to evaporate, and very little atmospheric moisture to work with, so we expect nothing more than a few isolated showers over North Alabama ahead of the front. Nothing meaningful to help with the drought situation. Otherwise, today will be partly sunny with a high in the low to mid 80s.

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: The weather turns cooler; sunny pleasant days and clear chilly nights on these three days. Highs in the 70s, and lows in the 40s… colder pockets should visit the 30s early Sunday morning. Fine fall weather.

TIME CHANGE: Don’t forget we go back on standard time this weekend… set the clocks back one hour before you go to bed Saturday night. On Sunday, sunrise will come at 6:11a CST, and sunset will be at 4:50p CST.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For round one of the high school playoff games tomorrow night, the weather will be clear and very cool with temperatures falling into the 50s.

Auburn will host Vanderbilt Saturday (11a CT kickoff)… it will be a perfect day for football with a sunny sky… temperatures will climb from 67 at kickoff, to near 72 by the fourth quarter.

Alabama will be on the road; they play LSU Saturday night (7p CT kickoff)… the sky will be clear with temperatures falling through the 60s. A great night for football.

NEXT WEEK: Our weather just won’t change; dry Monday through Friday with sunny days and fair nights. Highs mostly in the 70s, lows mostly in the 40s.

PATTERN FLIP: Both the GFS and the European (ECMWF) global models show a pattern change at mid-month, opening the door for the return of rain to Alabama.

AT THE BEACH: Sunny days, fair nights on the Gulf Coast through next week. Highs in the low 80s today, upper 70s tomorrow and over the weekend. See a very detailed Gulf Coast forecast here.

TROPICS: A disturbance is well northeast of the Leeward Islands; if anything develops it will stay over the open water and is no threat to land.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
