Showers, Storms Increasing

Showers and storms are increasing across Alabama and points to the west this afternoon.

The storms are elevated, meaning that the instability is elevated, or not surface based. This is because the warm air causing the instability is up above a stable layer near the surface.

Over Alabama, the strongest storms are over Bibb and Chilton Counties, with the max intensity between Maplesville and Billingsley. This storm is not severe, but it producing lots of heavy rain and intense lightning. There could be some small hail. It will move east southeast in the general direction of Deatville, Wetumpka and Eclectic.

Storms over eastern Mississippi will affect Pickens, northern Greene and Tuscaloosa Counties between now and 4 p.m.

To the west, much stronger storms are over northern Louisiana and western Mississippi. Severe thunderstorm warnings are in effect for areas from Monroe to Natchez and Yazoo City in Mississippi.

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for eastern Texas, southern Arkansas, northern Louisiana and western Mississippi.

For Alabama, storms will be strong through the afternoon and evening hours. A few storms could be severe south of a line from Reform to Tuscaloosa to Centreville to Hayneville to Luverne. The best chance will be over southern Sumter, Choctaw, Washington and northern Mobile Counties. The main threat will be hail although there could be an isolated wind damage report.
