Alabama Update at 7 p.m.: Showers from the Remnants of Delta Continue Across Alabama

At 527 PM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm 7 miles southwest of Cherokee, or 9 miles east of Tishomingo State Park, moving north at 20 mph.
At 506 PM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm over Smith Dam, or 11 miles southeast of Arley, moving northeast at 40 mph.
While the threat of tornadoes has lessened for now in the eastern and southeastern parts of Central Alabama, we’ll still have a small risk throughout the rest of the evening.
At 4:40 pm, some broad rotation was detected on radar south of West Jefferson in Jefferson county and moving to the north-northeast. We’ll have to watch and see if it tightens up and if a warning will need to be issued.
The threat for brief tornadoes will continue into the early evening as convection spreads slowly eastward.
Weakening is forecast during the next 36 hours, and Delta’s surface low is expected to dissipate across West Virginia late Sunday night.

As of 1:40 pm, the good news continues to be that we have not had any tornado warnings issued sofar today across Central Alabama. The bad news is the primary threat of a few brief tornadoes are possible across Central Alabama thru 9:00 pm, with the highest threat south of I-20 and east of I-65.
NWS Birmingham, in conjunction with the SPC, has issued a Tornado Watch until 8:00 pm for the following counties in Central Alabama: Barbour, Bullock, Calhoun, Chambers, Clay, Cleburne, Coosa, Elmore, Lee, Macon, Montgomery, Pike, Randolph, Russell, Talladega, Tallapoosa.
The Storm Prediction Center has expanded the Slight Risk for Central Alabama to now include portions of the area along and east of a line from just east of Selma to Hoover to Center Point to Piedmont.
