Coming into the Light

Coming into the Light

James says that I have come over to the light. The light to which he refers is the Apple light. On Friday, I finally got an I Phone. He says that next I will be buying Mac Book Pro. The delay is because I am abhorrent of replacing a cell phone until it is two […]

Nothing real encouraging for you snow fans on the 00 UTC GFS or NAM. Looks like most of the precip moves out as the cold air moves in…maybe ending as a little light snow. Surface temps on both models stay well above freezing all day Monday…even in north Alabama. BHM actually could stay above 40 […]

Thanks to Greg from Huntsville for these images… he writes: “James and Crew: I took these pictures while delivering emergency supplies to Beaver Dam, KY in Ohio County. The devastation was unreal. This is worse than the damage caused by Hurricane Dennis in 2005, which I witnessed first hand in Pace, Florida. People don’t realize […]

With a lot more information in now, including the 12Z UKMET, NOGAPS, and looking at some current info, here’s what we can say right now. Since it’s a Saturday and people reading here are interested in weather, I’ll throw in some technical stuff. This is probably my longest blog post ever. Current situation: Temperatures warming […]

How Can We Think The “S” Word?

How Can We Think The “S” Word?

Snow, that is? On an afternoon like this? I truly believe that if the world was flat, that we could see objects 70 or 80 miles away today. The air is just that clear and sparkling. In fact, I was just looking at the aviation sequence surface plot from WeatherTap and they show not even […]

All info not available yet…more later. NAM shows precip lasting until Monday afternoon, with the air becoming cold enough for snow right at the end. GFS shows about the same thing, about 3 hours faster. Canadian model is colder, shows possibility of 1-2″ in central AL. The GFS and NAM both indicate that temperatures will […]

The North Sea Flood of 1953

The North Sea Flood of 1953

Over half of the Netherlands lies below sea level. Dikes have been built to protect large areas of land from the sea. On January 31, 1953, the Netherlands experienced its worst flood disaster in five centuries as a furious storm attacked the North Dutch Coast, with the greatest surge on record for the North Sea. […]

Steve Weiss, a long-time forecaster at the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) and really nice guy, gave a talk in the same session with me at the Severe Local Storms Conference in 2008 (for paper on this talk, click here). He pointed out that sometimes, the forecast confidence can actually decrease with time. That may be […]

Some Snow/Rain Mix Occurring

Precipitation was moving southeastward across parts of North and Central Alabama tonight. It consisted of mostly sprinkles, but there were a few heavier showers mixed in, especially over parts of Blount, Jefferson, St. Clair, Talladega and Clay Counties. Temperatures were around 40 into the upper 30s in the Birmingham metro, but the further east and […]

Friday Night Notes

Friday Night Notes

Peeking at the 00Z runs… not much change from earlier today. Still not enough evidence to suggest any strip of heavier snow across North Alabama for now. The GFS keeps the surface low far to the south, and the NAM is wetter and hints at some accumulation possibility across the northern third of the state […]

Just finished an IM conference with our gang… J.B. Elliott, Brian Peters, Jason Simpson, Bill Murray, etc… time to get as specific as possible about Monday. Needless to say, this is a first call, and probably not as detailed as you like. It will change over the weekend, most likely. IMPORTANT NOTES: *During every Alabama […]
