COLD AIR IN PLACE: For most of Alabama, the sky is sunny this afternoon… but the exception is the northwest part of the state where clouds are hanging tough at mid-afternoon. Temperatures under the cloud cover are hovering around freezing… elsewhere we have upper 30s and low 40s.
The morning clouds are giving way to afternoon sunshine across Alabama. Today through Thursday, we are experiencing cold days with highs in the upper 30s to lower 40s, despite tons of sunshine in the forecast.
If weather forecasts hold true, mid-January could bring prolonged, sub-freezing temperatures to Alabama.
COLD: Temperatures will remain well below average through the rest of the week across the Deep South, and Alabama will be dry through Thursday. Highs will range from 35 to 45 degrees across the state, with lows well below freezing. The northern third of the state will dip into the teens early Thursday morning.

COLD: Snow flurries and showers have ended across Alabama this afternoon, but clouds linger over most of the state. It is a cold, windy afternoon with temperatures ranging from the upper 20s over the northern counties to around 40 degrees near Dothan.
Light snow showers are creating a wintry scene across North and North Central Alabama this morning, with minor travel impacts possible on elevated surfaces as temperatures remain below freezing.
Temperatures are holding in the 30s today, and an icy north wind has wind chills below freezing. Lingering moisture is allowing for some snow flurries to fly through the air across the northern half of Alabama, but no travel impacts will occur.
Carmichael Library at the University of Montevallo has been chosen among a select group of national libraries, colleges and universities to host “Americans and the Holocaust,” a traveling exhibition from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum that examines the motives, pressures and fears that shaped Americans’ responses to Nazism, war and genocide in Europe during the 1930s and 1940s.
COLD AIR MOVING IN: Temperatures will fall into the 30s across the northern half of Alabama this morning, and will stay there all day with an icy north wind. A few snow flurries are possible in the cold air, but there will be no impact.
As of 9:50pm, we currently have no active warnings for Alabama, but the line of rain and storms continues to move eastward through the area, stretching from north of Scottsboro to Jasper to south of York.
At 8:45 PM CST, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Pickensville, moving east at 40 mph. Radar has indicated rotation within the storm, which could lead to the development of a tornado.
We have some active storms out there over the western parts of the state, including a potential tornado touchdown near Vina in Franklin County, with power outages reported.
At 8:05 PM CST, Doppler radar detected thunderstorms along a line extending from near Caledonia to near Brooksville. These storms are moving northeast at 45 mph.
